Before the Mast's third anniversary celebration in August 2013 meant, among others, a new youtube movie made with a sea shanty and the graphics provided by members at the graphic contest:

Meanwhile, a few more months have passed, making us to complete 40 months of writing "BEFORE THE MAST" and 12 months of the story. As the year 1719 is getting to a close, we are moving to jcink to open a new page in the story, namely the year 1720.

A long eventful year passed. Now it's 1720 in the West Indies. Peace is to be signed soon, and the former enemies will get allied against the common foe - pirates, looting indiscriminately. Privateers remain in the business only for hunting pirates. Will our pirate crew survive?

Which side are you on? Sharpen your blades, load your guns, drain that last sip of rhum and join our adventures, spreading death BEFORE THE MAST!

It's 1720 in the West Indies. Peace is to be signed soon, and the former enemies will get allied against the common enemy - pirates, looting indiscriminately. Privateers remain in the business only for hunting pirates. Will our pirate crew survive?

Sea fights, duels, plenty of swashbuckling adventures, intrigues of all kinds, mutiny, romance, betrayal – BEFORE THE MAST brings to live the Age of Sail like none before. Which side are you on?

    OUR SHIPS NEED MORE CREW!

    - 1 boatswain - 30-45 years of age, from a poor to middle class family, with some schooling and with authority over the sailors (preferably because he can impose naturally) needed by the British Navy.

    - 3 gunner’s mates needed by the pirates, privateers and French Navy. Aged 18-30 , from a poor to middle class family, with some schooling, eventually, those 25+, veterans of the War of Spanish Succession, which he could have fought in on land or at sea.

    - 3 ship boys – 12-15 years of age, from a poor to middle class family, needed by the pirates, privateers and British Navy

    - sailors - as many as possible, anywhere between the ages of 15 and 50, volunteers (for all ships) or victims of the press gang (for the British and French Navy). Among them, a jovial older mentor would be welcome, a roguish man in his 20s, and any other types you might wish.

For the privateers, most of them would hate the Navy authority (but not willing to turn pirates either), would run from something in their past or simply want the good prize for hunting pirates. (Those who are 25+ most likely are veterans of the War of Spanish Succession.) Some privateers might be as well repented pirates who have taken the king's pardon. The privateers can have sailors of French origin too, since they had recruited in Port de Paix several times.

It would be interesting if one of the pirates or privateers would be racist/ prejudiced and having to overcome his prejudice, given that at least one of the crewmen is black. For common sailors, some black or having Native American blood would be welcome among pirates and privateers.

For more opportunities and details on the tasks of each position, check the ship ranks and tasks and the ship roster, because if you want a position which is not mentioned in the roster as limited and already taken, it might become yours!

We hope you love drama, action and romance, because that's what we have to offer here. Being a part of our crews will give you the opportunity to get involved in sea battles, duels, political intrigues and all kind of adventures. The plot will further develop according to your wishes, as, besides the general plot/ laying, there are several player-driven side ones. Your characters will have crewmates, finding among them friends or enemies, and plots to enter in immediately. We have many stories still left to be told...

    Other notes:

The requirements are simple - people who can write in English (not all our players are native English speakers, but they can write in English) and who can post at least once a week for each character/ thread.

We have guides to help you with the time setting, and we are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Come live with us BEFORE THE MAST the Age of Sail times! Sharpen your blades, load your guns, drain that last sip of rhum and join our adventures!

Yes, BEFORE THE MAST wants YOU!

Site name and link:Before the Mast

Site genre: Historical/ Age of Sail

Opening date: 6-th of August 2010

Site info: 1720, West Indies. Allied Navies and privateers fighting pyracy. We have four ships of different allegiances, plenty of swashbuckling adventures, intrigues of all kinds, mutiny, romance, betrayal and the regular life of the Age of Sail. Which side are you on?

    Your name: Elena

    Your primary staff account: Elena

Contact info: PM here or directly on the board

    Positions hiring for: moderator

    Information:

We are currently in search of a new pilot to help sailing the ship among the labyrinth of islands. Do you think you have what it takes to sail away with the likes of us? There may be treasure in it for you... if we succeed to catch it. Otherwise, ”no prey, no pay”, how the pirates’ Articles of Agreement say.

Yes, we're putting up a staff search for a new moderator! Everyone is welcome to apply, if you have the time and skills needed.

We're looking for people who are active and dedicated to our cause. The staff search is published both on this site and also on several resource sites for people to see, and reply to. We are trying to find the best person to fit the bill. If you think you are one, let us know!

Ideal applicant: The ideal applicant is someone friendly and dedicated, active, creative, who wants to help out in many aspects of the site and meets the following criteria:

    * interested in history and in our Age of Sail story (previous knowledge in the field is NOT necessary, only the interest to learn).

    * loving to write and to advertise

    * keeping active and stimulating players’ activity (especially newbies’) is also important, having the site as one of the priorities in order to be an example for the members. This means, first of all, logging in, if possible, daily, and, when not possible, notifying the staff about their absence

    * being a member of LiveJournal / InsaneJournal / myspace or other less used advertising means is an advantage

    * having a yahoo account for communication ease is an advantage.

Main tasks to perform (mostly in co-operation with the other staff members):

    - getting involved in the community life and promoting activity through writing NPCs when needed and creating new plot opportunities, besides keeping their characters active;

    - undertaking a fair and measured review of all applications and expressing their constructive opinions;

    - advertising the site through all means

    - welcoming newcomers and answering questions. Players’ or guests’ questions should be answered as soon as possible. If they need consultation, an acknowledgement to the player that the question was received and needs discussion will be sent.

    - deciding on the upcoming events on the board, including the site-wide plot development

    - enforcing the code of conduct (i.e. dealing with potential conflicts or breaking of rules)

Please fill out the form below and send it off to Elena, in a bottle. (Yes, you may post it herebelow or in a PM). The open seas are waiting for you…

    NAME:

    AGE:

COUNTRY: (interesting both from the point of view of timezones and if English is or isn’t your mother tongue. About 1/3 of the board members are from Europe and not native English speakers, so yes, you may be one too.)

CONTACT: (A valid e-mail address, MSN, Yahoo)

MOTIVATION: (Why have you chosen an Age of Sail site? Why do you want to be staff here? What could you contribute to the site? What do you think is the most important thing when running a writing community?)

ACTIVITY: (How active will you be able to be? How much time daily/ weekly do you think you can and should contribute to “Before the Mast”? We don't want to add someone to the staff who is going to disappear in a month. We're looking for longevity.)

EXPERIENCE: (as staff member. Please list any sites you have been a staff member on, and provide links if possible - even if it is an offline board.). If you have no previous staff experience, but you are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to keep up with the task, you will be considered too.

ADVERTISING: Are you a member of LiveJournal? InsaneJournal? Myspace ? Do you have a blog where you can advertise the site? Other similar less known advertising means?

    Thanks in advance!

Before the Mast's January issue of the "Chronicles and Histories of the West Indies" is up, with news, gossips and contest results – because yes, we have some winners! Congratulations to them, and they have already received their prizes.

The Battle of Nassau has started, involving HMS Sovereign in one corner of the open sea, the French and privateer ships close to Nassau harbour and there is also the special mission “Hermione” is involved in.

Join the adventures, with your own characters or with NPCs, and make your mark on the history “Before the Mast”!

Before the Mast is an excellent site of quality people who don't flake out on you. That alone is worth a thousand sites that do. : )
