OpenOffice used to be my go to, but they stopped updated it, and then retired it, and then came back to.. not update it? It's all so confusing. So I use LibreOffice now.
I second LibreOffice. It has a pretty good suite, and it's what I use to open old .rtf files (from Wordpad on Windows) since Notepad won't open them. It also does pretty well with opening MS Docs and preserving most of the formatting. I can also personally attest to VLC Media Player and 7Zip. They are awesome free resources. Audacity as well. There's a bit of a learning curve but youtube is your friend and it's easy to pick up and experiment with.
