Under a rubble of heresy accusations and persecution, the religion of Gnosticism has been abandoned for centuries. It has long been considered a mere perversion of Christianity. Those who sought to abolish it through neglect have not, however, entirely succeeded. In content secrecy, in unobtrusive isolation, Gnosticism’s followers have nurtured its old, quiet, softly breathing body.

A sect of Gnosticism known as The Divine Spark has existed in northern England since the 1800s. It began on somewhat elitist terms, by a group of powerful and wealthy individuals who came to see themselves as spiritual leaders. Richard Bly, founder of the sect, had a cliffside mansion constructed in 1816, private and large enough that the Divine Spark members felt comfortable making it their sanctum.

Since that time, The Divine Spark has seen periods of fashionable fanaticism and disinterest alike. The organization’s activity often seems to depend on prominent members, the deaths or absences of whom tend to unravel collective devotion. Inevitably, though, the dark Spark’s appeal draws in new curiosity and is resurrected again.

Now, in 1940, at the beginning of a second World War, a new flock seeks gnosis. While the corrupt human soul cannibalizes itself with fire and steel, the cold hand of a revived cult reaches out to spirit away some of the world’s weary refugees. Perhaps, in the darkest times, it’s easier to find the divine spark within us all.
